A brief book regarding Ten Questions and Answers about the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), Some non-Muslim westerners have been wondering what it is that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) presented to humanity, particularly after the defamation of his honorable character by western media, and we deem it our duty to answer the questions regarding what our Prophet gave to humanity and the world.

Why did Muhammad marry several women? Did he do so for sexual gratification?

Whenever Prophet Muhammad’s name emerges, the image in many people’s minds is a man with many wives. For Muslims, his multiple marriages had meaning and immense implications for Islam, and by extension, the history of the world. Needless to say, the issue remains controversial, and as such, any study of the matter requires an objective approach. Therefore we will endeavour to tackle this topic by being as objective as possible.

The Prophet Muhammad was driven by the goal to ensure that his mission as the Messenger of God was fulfilled and to establish a society based on God’s commands, and not his own. In order to achieve this goal, he did everything that was humanly possible: he forged relations with the various tribes of Arabia, concluded peace treaties with his sworn enemies and kept relations with the heads of various tribes, nations and religions. Taken together his marriages was one way bywhich he fostered relationships with various influential tribes.

If one were to view the marriages of the Prophet from this context, the motivating factors behind his marriages become clear. It would be very simplistic and incorrect to view his marriages as being merely for lustful ends.

Let us now briefly examine the context of each one of his marriages to see whether this was the case. From the outset, it is of ultimate importance to note that, except for one of his wives, all of his eleven wives were widowed or divorced. Most were in fact widowed.

His first marriage was to a widow named Khadijah, who had been married twice and whom he married when she was forty years old and he was twenty five. She was the first woman to embrace Islam. She provided great consolation to him throughout his life and he continued to remember her in his later years as his most beloved wife. He stayed with her faithfully for 25 years until her death, at which time he was 50 years old, and she was 65 years old.

If he was driven by lustful desires as accused by his opponents, he could have married several, beautiful young women in a society where having numerous wives was a norm – there would be no reason to faithfully remain with an older woman until the age of 50. This single fact would be sufficient to totally refute the charges against him in this regard. However, an examination of all of his marriages, as we shall see, should put this question to rest.

After Khadija’s death, he married another widow, Sawda, who was 65 years old. She and her previous husband, Sakran, were among those who had immigrated to Ethiopia, fleeing from the oppression and persecution of the Meccans. It was during their return to Mecca that her husband had died. Seeing her difficult condition, the Prophet married her.

Then he married Aisha, daughter of his lifelong friend and companion Abu Bakr. Aisha had first been betrothed to Jabir bin Mut’im at the age of 5. Child marriages were evidently the norm at that time. She was the only virgin among the Prophet’s wives and the only one who was born into a Muslim family.

One of the Prophet’s goals in this marriage was to strengthen the bond of his brotherhood with Abu Bakr, who was his main defender against the Meccans. Second, Aisha was of a lineage known for honor and intelligence. The Prophet knew that she would tremendously benefit his nation (ummah) by transmitting crucial knowledge from his life, especially family and personal matters that others were not privy to. Indeed, the Prophet advised his community to learn half of the knowledge of the religion from Aisha. The foresight of the Prophet proved itself, for she would live for 45 years after his death, and thus became one of the main sources of Prophetic wisdom and knowledge.

He also married another widow, Hafsa, who was the daughter of Umar Bin Khattab, his next closest companion. Her husband, Khunays, had been martyred in the Battle of Badr. He felt a duty towards Umar, whose acceptance of Islam provided a major boost for the Muslims in Mecca against their foes. Continue reading

What Do You Actually Know About Islam?

Islam is a religion and a way of life. It means submission, devotion, and obedience to God, the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Therefore, a Muslim is someone who submits himself to God. That is the reason why every prophet and messenger of God and their followers were by definition ‘Muslims’, as stated in the Qur’an.

“Whoever submits His whole self to Allah and is a doer of good,- He will get his reward with his Lord; on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve” [The Qur’an, 2: 112].

Islam is the religion of God and the same message which all the prophets and messengers of Almighty God came with, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist, Jesus and fifinally Muhammad – may the peace and blessings of God be upon them. Therefore, Muslims believe in, love, and respect all the prophets and messengers of Almighty God. “The messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! your forgiveness (do we crave), and to you is the eventual course” [The Qur’an, 2:285].

Islam aims to preserve the basic rights of human beings, establishing security and peace in society and the world as a whole. Islam urges its followers to be kind, polite, decent, and good citizens in a society. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said : “The best among you are those who have the best manners and character” [Bukhari, 56].

What is Islam all about ?

Islam calls for, and nurtures a loving and direct relationship between ‘God’ and ‘humans’ with no intercessors or intermediaries “Surely to Allah alone sincere devotion (and obedience) is due” [The Qur’an, 39:3].

When you pray, you pray directly to God, and when you want to repent from your sins, you ask God directly for forgiveness.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me” [The Qur’an, 2:186] and “And your Lord says, Call upon Me; I will respond to you” [The Qur’an, 40:60].

Islam is the religion of pure human nature and clarity. It urges and calls its followers to ask about all issues or problems they may encounter or endure, from the simple problems of their every day life to the deepest, most complex and also the most incomprehensible questions of their existence.

“So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know” [The Qur’an, 16:43]

‘People of knowledge’ refers to the experts in the various fields known for their expertise.

In Islam, the whole doctrine is clearly explained, therefore there are no obscure or mysterious components to the belief.

“Allah would explain to you and guide you by the examples of those who were before you, and would turn to you in mercy. Allah is Allknowing, All-wise. And Allah would turn to you in mercy; but those who follow vain desires would have you go immensely astray. Allah would lighten your (diffificulties): For man was created weak (in flflesh)” [The Qur’an, 4:26-28].

Islam is not a religion of monasticism or separation from the worldly life. On the other hand, it does not allow the uncontrolled indulgence of worldly pleasures and desires. It teaches us to nourish and satisfy our soul and spiritual needs as much as we need food and provision for our body. It is a complete social system which promotes a lifestyle based on moderation, embracing both religious and mundane affairs, and considers them complementary to one another: neither aspect should prevail at the expense of the other.

“But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and be kind as Allah has been good (kind) to you, and seek not mischief in the land” [The Qur’an, 28:77].

Islam places men and women all equal before their Lord regardless of their race, tongue, national origin, appearance, wealth and social status. The criterion for differentiation among them arises in their compliance with the divine regulations.

“O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware” [The Qur’an, 49:13].

The most pivotal benefifits that Islam provides for the individual are:

1. True happiness and inner peace.
2. Practical guidance in leading a good life.
3. A correct understanding of human nature.
4. Forgiveness from all previous sins.
5. The gateway to eternal Paradise.
6. Salvation from Hell-fire.

In order to gain such benefifits and much more, there is primarily one basic step to take: It is to bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah and that Muhammad is his servant and messenger. This is what we call ‘Testimony of Faith’, which is the fifirst pillar in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Islam has been built on fifive (pillars), testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, establishing the Prayers, paying the Zakat (the annual poor due), making the Pilgrimage to the House (in Mecca, once in a lifetime) and fasting in Ramadhan” [Bukhari, 8 - Muslim, 16]. It is important not to let our mind be framed by barriers or limitations that may discourage us, such as the use of the Arabic language. The meaning of ‘Allah’ is in fact simply ‘Almighty God’ and it is an exclusive title which no-one else besides Him has been given, in all of human history.

When I use the word ‘Allah’ I mean the same God that created Adam and Eve, the same God that sent prophets such as Abraham, Job, Lot, David, Jesus and Mohammad peace and blessings be upon them. I do not mean a different God than the God that spoke to Moses, and split the sea for him. I mean the exact same God that saved Noah in the ark and Jonah in the Whale. I mean the exact same God that created Jesus in the womb of Virgin Mary.

Even Arab Christians use the word ‘Allah’ when they refer to the Creator of the Universe. You can verify this in the Arabic translations of the Holy Bible. Continue reading

What You Must Believe About Your Creator

Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saleh al-Uthaimeen
Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 85 | Size: 3 MB

(adapted from the book, ‘Aqeedah at-Tawheed’ by Shaikh Saleh ibn Fawzan ibn Abdullah al-Fawzan)

‘Al-Aqeedah (faith)’ is what a person takes as a religion. It is said, ‘He has a good Aqeedah’ meaning,’ He is protected from doubts.’

Aqeedah is an action of the heart – which is to believe and affirm something in the heart.

“The Sharee’ah is divided into two parts; Beliefs and Actions.

(a) Beliefs are issues that are not related to how an act is performed such as belief in the Lordship of Allah, the obligation to worship Allah (alone) and belief in the other afore-mentioned pillars of Eeman (faith). These are called Asliyah – the basic foundation.

(b) The latter part consists of issues related to how actions are performed like Salaat (prayer), Zakaat (charity), Sawm (fasting) and other rulings with regards to actions. These are termed as Far’eyyah – the branches, because their soundness or corruption is based upon the beliefs.

The correct Aqeedah is thus the foundation upon which the religion is based. It is the correct Aqeedah with which the actions are set aright as the Most High said, “So, whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” [Soorah al-Kahf (18): 110]

“Indeed, it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) as it was to those (Prophets) before you, ‘If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers.” [Soorah az-Zumar (39): 65]

“So, worship Allah (alone) by performing religious deeds sincerely for His sake. Surely, the religion is for Allah only.” [Soorah Zumar (39): 2]

These verses and numerous other narrations that have been related in this regard confirm that actions are not accepted unless they are free from Shirk (polytheism/associating partners with Allah).

It was therefore the main concern of the Messengers (alaihimus-salaam) to rectify the beliefs first.

Sole worship of Allah and abandonment of worship to anything other than Him was their primary call as the Most High says, “Verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming), ‘Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid the Taghoot (everything that is worshiped other than Allah).” [Soorah An-Nahl (16): 36]

The first issue addressed by every Prophet was, “Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (deity worthy of being worshiped) but Him.” [Soorah al-A'raf (7): 59, 65, 73, 85]

It was said by Nuh, Hood, Saleh, Suhaib (alaihimus-salaam) and all the other Prophets (alaihimus-salaam) to their nations. After being bestowed with Prophethood, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahi alaihi wa-sallam) stayed in Mecca for thirteen years calling people to Tawheed and rectifying their Aqeedah because Aqeedah is the foundation upon which the entire structure of the Deen stands.

The Duaat (callers to the religion of Allah) and those who seek to guide others during every age followed the example of the Messengers and the Prophets who initiated their call with Tawheed (Oneness of Allah’s worship) and correction of Aqeedah, and subsequently focusing upon the remaining commandments of the Deen (religion).”

This book comprehensively explains Tawheed in the words of Shaikh ibn Saleh al-Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) from the book, ‘Sharh Hadeeth Jibra’eel’.

Unravelling The Myths About The Shee’ah

http://islamfuture.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/unravelling-the-myths-about-the-shee-ah.jpg?w=450&h=395

Indeed, all praise is due to Allaah, we thank Him and from seek His help and forgiveness. We also seek refuge in Allaah from the evils of our souls and from our evil actions. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.1 The best speech is the Book of Allah and the best way is the way of Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam). The worst of affairs are the innovations (into the religion of Islaam), because every innovation is heresy, every heresy is deviation and every deviation leads to the hellfire.

This humble study is for the sincere people that are seeking the truth. It is not intended to be an attack on a person’s identity, or on the culture that a person happens to be born into without full knowledge, or what one thought was Islaam without access to the full facts. Rather, it hopes to outline some of the beliefs of the Shee’ah and show how they are not in line with Islaam as presented in the Qur’aan, Sunnah (way) of Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) or the understandings of the early generations of righteous Muslims. Please look at the evidence presented fairly as we do feel the need to resort to bringing about conflicts with the ignorant, facts have merely been presented and it is for the sincere reader to decide.

Unfortunately, due to the secretive manner of the ‘knowledgable’ amongst the Shee’ah, many people are not aware of their actual beliefs. Muslims are not conscious of the differences between Islaam and the Shee’ah belief. Most Shee’ah writings revolve around emotional issues of love for the Prophet’s family and people believe that the Shee’ah belief is just this. However, they can still be Muslims and love the family of the Prophet in the way that they deserve without being Shee’ah.

In our call to Tawheed, we are faced with many Shee’ah people who are not familiar with what the majority of their own scholars have invented which have thus rendered the Shee’ah belief system as heretical, contrary to the understanding of the family and companions of the Prophet and thus outside the fold of Islaam. We repeat that we are not trying to offend the average Shee’ah, who may not even practice Islaam, but the truth of what will be presented in this short work should be assessed fairly and unemotionally.

The religious beliefs and practices of extremist Shee’ah segregate them from Islaam, the Shee’ah have specific beliefs about Allaah and His attributes, the Prophets, the mission and call of Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) and even the Qur’aan.2 A short history of the Shee’ah will be detailed with all the sources quoted and referenced for those who wish to pursue further research and study, followed by a point by point analysis of the main Shee’ah concepts. The evidence concealed in the books of Shee’ah scholars themselves will be analyzed so as to be unbiased and to demonstrate that the family of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) followed the truth of the Qur’aan and Sunnah and never cursed the Sahaabah (Companions of Muhammad) and further dismissed the extreme claims of those Shee’ah who came much later.

For example, these quotes from the family of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) will reveal the contradictory practice of cursing the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad and hating most of the Companions which is done by the extreme Shee’ah.

The term ‘Shee’ah’ (plural: Shiya’) comes from the Arabic verb ‘Shaa’a’ which means to spread, hence ‘Shee’ah’ means a faction or sect and is used with that meaning in the Qur’aan in both singular and plural forms many times. For example:

ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّہُمۡ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ عِتِيًّ۬ا

Then We will certainly drag out from ever sect (Shee’ah) those who were most obstinate in their rebellion against Allaah, Most Gracious {Maryam: 69}

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects (Shiya’) you have no part in them in the least. Their affairs are with Allaah, He will tell them the truth of what they did in the end {al-An’aam: 159}

The term ‘Shee’ah’ was first used to describe the followers of the fourth rightly guided Caliph, ‘Ali ibn Abee Taalib, may Allaah be pleased with him, and the term came to be applied to those who simply loved and greatly respected the family of the Prophet Muhammad. However, after ‘Ali’s death, some of his followers retained the name exclusively and they began to rapidly deteriorate in morals, creed and belief. Continue reading

Common Questions Asked By Hindus About Islam

Dr. Zakir Naik

In conveying the message of Islam to a non-Muslim, it is usually not sufficient to highlight only the positive nature of Islam. Most non-Muslims are not convinced about the truth of Islam because there are a few questions about Islam at the back of their minds that remain unanswered. This article will help non-Muslims to discover and know more common questions about Islam in more depth.

1. IDOL USED FOR CONCENTRATION

Question:

The Hindu Pundits and Scholars agree that the Vedas and other Hindu religious scriptures prohibit idol worship, but initially because the mind may not be matured, an idol is required for concentration while worshipping. After the mind reaches higher consciousness, the idol is not required for concentration.

Answer:

Muslims have reached the higher level of consciousness

Muslims have reached the higher level of consciousness. If an idol is required for concentration only in the initial stages and not later on when the mind reaches higher consciousness then I would like to say the Muslims have already reached the state of higher consciousness because when we worship Allah (swt) we do not require any idol or statue.

Child asks why does it thunder?

When I was discussing with a Swami in IRF. He said that when our child asks us, “Why does the sky thunder?”, we reply that “aaee ma chakki pees rahi hai”, the grandmother is grinding flour in the heaven; because he is too young to understand. Similarly in the initial stages people require an idol for concentration.

In Islam we don’t believe in telling a lie, even if it’s a white lie. I will never give such a wrong answer to my child because later on when he goes to school and learns that the thundering sound after lightning is due to the expansion of rapidly heated air, he will either think that the teacher is lying or later on when he understands the fact he will conclude that the father is a liar. If you feel that the child may not understand certain difficult things you should simplify the answer rather than give a wrong fictitious reply. If you, yourself do not know the answer, you should have the guts to be truthful and say ‘I don’t know’. But many children nowadays will not be satisfied with this answer. If this answer was given to my son, he would say “Abba (father), why don’t you know?’ This will compel you to do your homework and thus educate yourself as well as your child.

Those in standard one require idol for concentration – (2 + 2 = 4 will remain same in standard one and ten) Some pundits while trying to convince me regarding idol worship said that in standard one the student is initially taught to worship God by concentrating with the help of an idol but later on when he graduates he no longer requires the idol to concentrate while worshipping the God. A very important fact to be noted is that only if the fundamentals of any particular subject is strong, then only will he be able to excel in future for e.g. A teacher of mathematics in standard one teaches the students that 2 + 2 = 4 irrespective whether the student passes school or does graduation or does a Ph. D. in mathematics, the basics of 2 + 2 = 4 will yet remain the same, it will not change to 5 or 6. In higher standards the student, besides addition may learn about Algebra, Trigonometry, Logarithm, etc. but the fundamental of addition will yet remain the same.

If the teacher in standard one itself teaches the fundamentals wrong, how can you expect the student to excel in future?

It is the fundamental principal of the Vedas regarding the concept of God that He has got no image, so how can the Scholars even after knowing this fact keep silent at the wrong practice being done by people.

Will you tell your son who is in standard one that 2 plus 2 is not equal to 4 but 5 or 6 and only confirm the truth after he passes school? Never. In fact if he makes a mistake you will correct him and say it is 4 and not wait till he graduates; and if you don’t correct him initially you will ruin his future. Continue reading

The Truth About The Original Sin

Issues related to belief might seem to be sensitive to dread on. However, with the advances in communication and the breaking up of cultural barriers among people of various cultures, it becomes necessary that beliefs be investigated objectively and with an open mind. All concerned religious scholars and believers need to give a sympathetic ear to alternative positions or beliefs offered by people from distant cultures seeking answers to resolve or at least clarify various issues of universal nature. Especially, if such beliefs are exported to other nations side by side with all types of merchandise. As governments set quality standards on imports of all types, I think it is important to test such common values and beliefs as well. In particular, our relation with the Christian world has become so close that we both need to get acquainted with what each party has to contribute to the understanding of such pressing issues.

Since the concept of “The Original Sin” in Christianity forms the corner stone out of which a cluster of beliefs like the godship of Jesus, crucifixion and salvation have emerged. Therefore, it singles itself out as a good candidate to be studied.

The methodology that will be followed in this essay about “The Original Sin” involves two types of evidence. The first is to carry on the study based on all logical possibilities that would explain the truth value of “The Original Sin”. As a matter of fact, the writer heavily depended on arguments developed by Ibn Taymiyah – a thirteenth century prominent Muslim scholar. The second type of evidence used to study “The Original Sin” depended on drawing evidence from The Bible itself to reveal the truth of the concept in Christianity.

In doing so, it is ultimately left to the readers whom God has bestowed with intellect that distinguishes them from all other creatures to ponder, analyze, evaluate then decide for themselves. Continue reading

The Truth About Jesus (PBUH)

The controversy about the personality of Jesus Christ is the major difference between Islam and Christianity. This difference keeps the followers of the two religions apart. Muslims look at Jesus Christ as a great Prophet of God and love and respect him as much as they love and respect Abraham, Moses and Muhammad. Christians on the other hand consider Jesus as God or son of God, a concept that Muslims cannot accept. Islam teaches that Jesus never made such a claim for himself. As a matter of fact all the cardinal doctrines of Christianity that are rejected by Islam centeraround the personality of Jesus. Specifically these are:  The Trinity, The Divinity of Jesus, The Divine Sonship of Christ, Original Sin, and Atonement.

It is clear that all these dogmas are the result of over-exhalting Jesus Christ above what God wants him to be. These differences focusing on the personality of Jesus have overshadowed the many similarities between Christianity and Islam. Continue reading

What Every Muslim Must Know About Purification:  A nice book covering many aspects of wudoo, ghusl, tayammum, and wiping over socks and bandages. Purity (Tahârah) is a beautiful word that is pleasing to the ears, and it is a quality which everyone strives to maintain. From an Islamic perspective, purity is a word which is general in its meaning. It may mean physical cleanness, which is purity (of the body) from impure substances or states of impurity, or it may mean spiritual purity, which is the purity of one’s self from vices, faults, sins, and replacing them with good deeds, whether in speech or deeds. This comprehensive meaning of purity is indicated in the words of Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH). Continue reading
