Tuhfat Al Muahidin Fi Ba’d akhbar al Burtughaliyyin – Tribute to the Holy Worriors in respect of a brief account of the Portuguese.

First written in Arabic in the late sixteenth century, Tuhfat al-Mujahidin is a pioneering historical work dealing with the struggles of the Malabar Muslims in southern India against the Portuguese colonisers’ encroachment in India, and the rise of Malabar as a medieval naval force under the Zamorin of Calicut. Based on the author’s own first hand information of events and what he could gather from reliable sources, it was written to motivate Muslims for the struggle against the invading Portuguese. Thus the republication of this anti-colonial manifesto could not have been more timely at a time when Muslims continue to be the only obstacle to the Western imperialistic ambitions. This translation of the Tuhfat is extensively annotated with more than 200 notes explaining local backgrounds and clearly identifying the names mentioned in the original Arabic work. The Tuhfat is compulsory reading for anybody trying to learn about post-Cordova episodes of Muslim history.

Its author, the sixteenth century’s Shaikh Zainuddin Makhdum was from the renowned Makhdum family from the town of Ponnani in Malabar, northern Kerala. He  rose to become a leading Islamic scholar, spending ten years studying in Mecca, where he also joined the Qadri order of Sufism. On his return to his native Malabar, he spent almost four decades teaching at the central mosque in Ponnani, then a major centre for Islamic studies in southern India. He also served as the envoy of the Zamorins, the Hindu rulers of Calicut, to Egypt and Turkey. Continue reading

Praise be to Allaah and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) told us that his Ummah (nation) would follow the previous nations, the Jews, Christians and Persians, but this was undoubtedly not praise for their actions, and rather it is by way of condemnation and a warning. It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, handspan by handspan, cubit by cubit, until even if they entered the hole of a lizard, you will do so too.” We asked, “O Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?” He said, “Who else?”
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3269; Muslim, 2669).

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“The Hour will not begin until my Ummah follows in the footsteps of those who came before it, handspan by handspan, cubit by cubit.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, like the Persians and Romans?” He said, “Those are the people?”
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6888).

The ignorant among this Ummah, and the innovators and heretics have followed the previous nations, the Jews, Christians and Persians, in their Beliefs, ways, manners and dress. Our concern here is to point out in these days their following and imitation of them through the innovation of “Mother’s Day” or “Family Day”, which is a day that the Christians innovated to honour mothers, or so they claim. This then Became a day that was venerated, when government departments would be shut and people would get in touch with their mothers or send them gifts and loving messages. But when the day was over, things would go back to the way they were, with people being cut off from their mothers and disobeying them.

What is strange is that the Muslims would feel a need to imitate them in such ways, when Allaah has commanded them to honour their mothers and has forbidden them to disobey them, and has made the reward for that (for obeying them) the highest status. Continue reading

Shaykh Khalid Yasin

Its unbelieveable how a concept is forced upon the world, with their eyes WIDE open. and all the while they talk to their priests, go to church, read the bible…. but simply say that Trinity is a mystery that can not be explained… ” And remember when Isa (Jesus) the son of Maryam said: O children of Israel! I am the Rasool (Messenger) of Allah towards you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and to give you good news of a Rasool that will come after me whose name shall be Ahmed (another name of Muhammad, meaning ‘The praised one’). But when he (Muhammad) came to them with clear signs, they said “This is plain magic.” Surat As-Saff : Verse 6 Continue reading

The People Of The Ditch

Shaykh Rifa’i Surur

This is a story that was narrated in a Hadīth on the authority of the Messenger of Allāh (pbuh) . Anyone who narrated a Hadīth on the authority of the Messenger (pbuh) was either a narrator who specialised in narration – such as Abū Hurayrah and Ibn ‘Abbās – or he was a Companion who was not a specialist, but felt compelled that he should narrate a particular Hadīth either due to the legal rulings it encompassed with regards his livelihood – such as ‘Adiyy ibn Hātim who narrated Hadīths about hunting, since he was a hunter – or due to the deep impact of its meanings. The narrator of this Hadīth falls into the latter category, and narrated it because he was deeply affected by its meaning – the narrator is Suhayb Al-Rūmī. He was among the Muslims who were oppressed in Makkah and wanted to emigrate with the Messenger of Allāh (pbuh) but was unable to do so, so he tried to escape after the Emigration. The polytheists found out about his plan and chased him. When they drew closer to him, they said to him, “You came to us a poor man, and you became rich when you were among us. Do you now wish to take this wealth to Muhammad?” He replied, “If I tell you where my wealth is, will you leave me alone?” They said, “Yes.” So he told them where his wealth was and they left him alone. When he reached the Messenger of Allāh (pbuh) and told him what happened, he (pbuh) said, “A profitable sale! A profitable sale!”

It was in relation to Suhayb Al-Rūmī that Allāh (swt) revealed:

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشۡرِى نَفۡسَهُ ٱبۡتِغَآءَ مَرۡضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ رَءُوفُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ

“And among mankind is he who would sell himself, seeking the Pleasure of Allāh. And Allāh is Kind to [His] slaves.” [Al-Baqarah: 207] Continue reading
