“By Time, Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” [Qur’an Surat Al’Asr]

This erudite scholar was born in England and has gained licenses to teach (ijaazas) in many Islamic sciences including Qur’an, Jurisprudence (Fiqh) and Traditions (Hadith) of The Prophet (SAW) from various Shyukh.

Following the completion of his secular studies at the age of 16, he enrolled at Dar al-Uloom al-Arabiyya al-Islamiyya, Bury (a satellite college to al- Azhar University), where he initiated his studies of the Alimiya course. “Faith in the Last Day is to believe that mankind will be resurrected and recompensed for their deeds.

It is to believe in everything that has come to us in the Book and the Sunnah concerning the description of that Day.

Allah has vividly described that Day such as the following verse:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّڪُمۡ‌ۚ إِنَّ زَلۡزَلَةَ ٱلسَّاعَةِ شَىۡءٌ عَظِيمٌ۬ – يَوۡمَ تَرَوۡنَهَا تَذۡهَلُ ڪُلُّ مُرۡضِعَةٍ عَمَّآ أَرۡضَعَتۡ وَتَضَعُ ڪُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمۡلٍ حَمۡلَهَا وَتَرَى ٱلنَّاسَ سُكَـٰرَىٰ وَمَا هُم بِسُكَـٰرَىٰ وَلَـٰكِنَّ عَذَابَ ٱللَّهِ شَدِيدٌ۬

“O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgment) is a terrible thing. The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state. Yet they will not be drunk but severe will be the Torment of Allah.”  [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 1-2]

There are numerous descriptions of the Last Day in the Quran and the Sunnah that testify to the horror and terrible nature of this Day.

Faith in the Last Day is not limited to believing in the Day that will be established after resurrection, as Shaikhul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) writes in Aqeedah al-Wastiyyah, “Faith in the Last Day includes believing in everything that the Messenger has informed us about that will happen after death.”

The first stage after death is the fitnah of the grave. The people will face trial or will be tested in their graves regardless of whether one is buried in the ground or is thrown in the sea or is eaten by a lion or (his ashes are) dispersed in the wind. He will face this fitnah and he will be asked about three matters;

a) Who is your Lord?
b) What is your Religion?
c) Who is your Prophet?

A believer will reply, ‘My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam and my Prophet is Muhammad .’ Then a caller will call from the heavens thatmyslave has spoken the truth. His gravewill then bewidened for him as far as his eyes can see. It will be furnished with furnishings from Paradise. A door will be opened into Paradise through which will come its fragrance and blessings. This condition is without doubt more complete than his condition in the world.

A disbeliever or hypocrite will say upon being asked about his Lord, Religion and Prophet, ‘Oh, Oh, I don’t know. I heard the people say something and I said it.’

Reflect upon what, ‘Oh, Oh,’ means. It indicates that the slave recollects something, tries to recall it but is unable to remember.

One’s inability to recall is more distressing than being completely unaware. If you are asked about something and you are unaware of it, you will say, ‘I don’t know.’ This is without doubt deficiency but it does not cause grief – but if you are asked about something and you knew it but you are incapable of recalling it – this causes grief. So the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, Oh.’ – as if he remembers something – “I don’t know. I heard the people say something and I said it.”

The disbeliever will then be hit with a large iron hammer whereupon he will let out a scream the sound of which will be heard by everything except the jinn and mankind – because if they were to hear it, they would be struck dumb. It is narrated that if all the people of a city like Mina were to gather together to carry this hammer, they would not be able to.

It is obligatory to believe in the Fitnah of the grave because believing in it is part of faith in the Last Day. Continue reading

Belief in the Day of Resurrection gives meaning and purpose to our brief stay in this transient world. It is the believer’s goal to win the Pleasure of His Lord by worshiping Him alone, fulfilling His Commands and refraining from His Prohibition during his worldly life-span. On the Day of Judgment, his fate will be decided in accordance with his record of deeds; he who fulfills his obligations will be rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise, and he, who fails to be a believer will be doomed to eternal Hell-Fire.

Those who reject the idea of being brought back to life are unable to understand the reality of this life and are ever confused about what lies beyond death. In their bewilderment, they concoct mysterious stories about what, if anything, happens to the soul after death.

Those who reject resurrection also cannot explain why certain things happen like, birth and death, why some people suffer while others commit the most heinous crimes against humanity and go unpunished?

Such uncertainty in belief causes misery in life. Self-indulgence overwhelms man and he races against time to achieve physical pleasures – by hook or by crook – for fear that his time will come to an end before he can enjoy life’s pleasures. Destructive behavior and immoral attitudes take the lead because disbelief in resurrection makes following any moral principle worthless. Man becomes inconsiderate of his fellow men. Consequently, the whole society suffers from chaos, greed, transgressions and intolerance.

On the other hand, a believer in resurrection focuses on his ultimate goal and does not let trivial pleasures of the world distract him. He is always satisfied with little provision and his soul is free from cravings and greed because he knows that what is in store for him in the Hereafter is much more than this world can offer. The Prophet (sallallahu aaihe wa-sallam) said, “The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.” [Saheeh Muslim]

A believer’s certainty of faith provides him with all the answers he needs to live a serene life; he understands the purpose of life and death, struggle and trial.

He is solicitous in his attitude and behavior with others and refrains from any sort of transgression. It does not upset him if he does not receive his due in this world or is treated unjustly because he is well-aware that this world is not the final place for judgment, rewards and punishments. He is certain that the time will come for all matters to be settled justly and that time is the Day of Judgement. Reckoning thus brings comfort and solace to the heart of a believer, and peace and tranquility to society as a whole.

Soorah an-Naba was revealed in response to the Arab pagan’s denial of the Day of Resurrection. It thus contains proofs of Allah’s Ability to resurrect His creation, proofs that we witness in our day to day lives!

Soorah an-Naba describes how this great event will take place and how the ambiance of the earth will quickly change into an atmosphere that will cause terror in the hearts of the people. The Soorah depicts the evil abode of the disbelievers and their crimes. It also illustrates the rewards and blessings the believers will receive from their Lord on the Day of Judgment. It further describes the great events of that Day; the intercessions, reckoning and weighing of the deeds in the balance. The Soorah contains admonitions and glad tidings for those who take heed. All praise is for Allaah. We praise Him, seek His aid and ask for His forgiveness. We seek Allaah’s refuge from the evils of ourselves and from our evil actions. Whomsoever Allaah guides then none can misguide him, and whomsoever Allaah misguides then none can guide him. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah alone, having no partners, and I testify that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

Before you, O Muslim, is a small treatise containing noble Aayaat of the Qur’aan, authentic sayings of the Prophet and selected Sharee’ah rulings.

Despite its small size, it comprises of that which the Muslim should know about death, the admonition it provides us with, and the encouragements and warnings related to it, as well as its effect upon the life of the Muslim.

It contains an abridgement of much of what is reported in the Book of Allaah, the One free and far removed from all defects and the Most High, and what is authentically reported from the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger with regard to Islamic regulations about funerals and related matters, whilst explaining the correct view where there is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars. These rulings are quoted without mentioning the evidences, discussion of the topic or quotations of the details from the books of fiqh, in order to make the book easy to read and to avoid making it lengthy.

The aim of this treatise is to make it easy to refer to the fiqh regulations concerning funerals when death occurs, which is something inevitable whether sooner or later, since it is a fact that the books written about this – being excellent but large – are difficult to refer to for the common Muslim, and even for the educated or the student of knowledge, particularly when the misfortune strikes and the hearts are preoccupied!

Finally, I ask Allaah, the Most Great, that He directs all the Muslims to the following of the Book of Allaah, He the One far removed and free from all defects, and the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger in all affairs in their lives, indeed He is the Hearing, and the One Who responds. And our final call is that all praise is for Allaah, Lord of the Worlds.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

قُلۡ هَـٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدۡعُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۟ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِى‌ۖ وَسُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Say (O Muhammad SAW): “This is my way; I invite unto Allâh (i.e. to the Oneness of Allâh – Islâmic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allâh i.e to the Oneness of Allâh – Islâmic Monotheism with sure knowledge). And Glorified and Exalted is Allâh (above all that they associate as partners with Him). And I am not of the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh; those who worship others along with Allâh or set up rivals or partners to Allâh).” Soorah Yoosuf (12):108

يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ أَمۡوَٲلُكُمۡ وَلَآ أَوۡلَـٰدُڪُمۡ عَن ذِڪۡرِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ وَمَن يَفۡعَلۡ ذَٲلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ – وَأَنفِقُواْ مِن مَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن يَأۡتِىَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَيَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوۡلَآ أَخَّرۡتَنِىٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ۬ قَرِيبٍ۬ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ – وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا‌ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ

O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allâh. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers. (9) And spend (in charity) of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says: “My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakât) of my wealth , and be among the righteous [i.e. perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah)] and other good deeds. (10) And Allâh grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allâh is All-Aware of what you do. (11) Soorah al-Munaafiqoon (63): 9-11

The Messenger of Allaah said: “Remember much that which cuts off pleasures:

Fear!

All perfect praise is due to Allaah; I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger; may Allaah send salutations upon him and exalt his mention, as well as his family and all his companions.

Fear is the sensation that results from the anticipation of an expected harm; it is also felt when a person loses, or expects to lose, something he cherishes; it is the exact opposite of security and can be applied to worldly matters as well as those of the Hereafter; it is the disturbance of the heart from an evil or harm that may befall a person, or, it can be the sensation it feels when missing out on something that is beloved to it.

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “Fear is no more than the pain and burning that one finds in his heart due to an expected harm; it is like the example of one who committed a crime and was subsequently caught; such a person will fear being sentenced to death, and the pain which his heart will suffer is dependent on how certain he is that he will (or will not) be sentenced, depending on the severity of his crime … sometimes one fears the ruler due to the power of the latter. Thus, when one realises the power of Allaah and knows that if Allaah wished to destroy all His creation it would not affect Him, nor could anyone stop Him from doing so, and therefore, one would fear Allaah to the extent of the sins that he has committed. This is the fear of warning.”

There is a certain type of fear that is experienced only by the knowledgeable, and it is called Khashyah in Arabic, as Allaah says:

إنما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء

which means: “…Only those among His servants fear Allaah who have knowledge…” [Faatir: 28]

This is fear that is based on knowledge. Standard fear of Allaah is experienced by the general Muslims whilst Khashyah is only experienced by the devout and the scholars from among them; the more knowledge one has regarding Allaah, the more he will fear Him. When one fears a person who may or may not apprehend him then this is regular fear, whereas if he is absolutely sure that this person can seize him and inflict harm upon him, then it is Khashyah.

Fear, with its various different meanings, is mentioned in many places in the Qur’aan, and its causes are varied:

# Fear during war and hostility; Allaah says:

فإذا جاء الخوف رأيتهم ينظرون إليك نظر المغشي عليه من الموت فإذا ذهب الخوف سلقوكم بألسنة حداد

which means: “… And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues…” [Al-Ahzaab: 19] ‘Fear’ in this verse refers to war.

# Fear resulting from knowledge, as Allaah says:

فمن خاف من موصٍ جنفاً

which means: “But if one fears from the bequeather [some] error…” [Al-Baqarah :182]

Allaah also says:

إلا أن يخافا ألا يقيما حدود الله

which means: “…Unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allaah…” [Al-Baqarah: 229] ‘Fear’ in this verse is due to one’s knowledge.

# Fear of punishment, as Allaah says:

يدعون ربهم خوفاً

which means: “…They [i.e., the believers] supplicate their Lord in fear…” [As-Sajdah: 16]

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “Know that fear is the whip by which Allaah controls His slaves so that they may continue exerting effort in order to come close to their Lord; fear is the light which illuminates the heart and enables it to distinguish good from evil.” When a person fears another, he will attempt to flee from him, and this is the case for everyone except Allaah; one escapes from Him by fleeing to Him. Death is not the absolute end. It is just the discontinuation of unity between the body and soul. It is a change from one state to another and a transition from this present life to that of the hereafter. “Allaah takes souls at the time of their death and [the souls] of those that do not die during their sleep. He retains those souls for which He has ordained death, whereas He releases the rest for an appointed term” [Qur’an 39:42] – ‘Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception’ {Qur’an 3:185}.

He was an eminent Maliki scholar who specialised in fiqh and Hadith. The breadth and depth of his scholarship are evident in his writings. The most famous of then is his twenty-volume tasfir al Jami’ li-ahkam al-Qar’an,

Imam al-Qirtubi was a man of great modesty who disdained worldly honours and throughout his life wore the simple gown and cap of the ordinary Muslin. He traveled from Spain to the East and settled in Munya Abi’l-Khusavb. in Upper Egypt. where he died in 671H/ 1273
