Every individual is born into a religious environment that is not necessarily in accordance with his or her choice; children are raised to follow the religion or ideology of their family, society or culture. Even as new-borns, they are assigned either the religion of their family or the ideology of the state; in some countries, the child’s assigned religion is even recorded on the birth certificate. By the time individuals reach their teens, they have usually accepted the beliefs of their parents or their particular society, feeling that they have little choice in the matter.

However, individuals often encounter, or are exposed, to various beliefs and ideologies throughout the course of their lives, leading many to question long-held beliefs, traditions or philosophical ideas. They begin to question the validity of their own beliefs. Seekers of truth often reach a point of confusion, especially upon realizing that the believers of every religion, sect, ideology and philosophy claim to profess the one and only truth.

There are only three possibilities: either everyone is correct or everyone is incorrect; or, only one is correct and the rest are incorrect. It is impossible for all of them to be upon the true religion as the fundamentals of all religions are different. On the other hand, to claim that they are all incorrect is to deny that Allah (Subhânahu wa Ta‘âlâ – Glorified and Exalted is He) revealed His will to humankind. This proposition will seem absurd to those who believe in a Wise Creator. After all, why would Allah create human beings and not reveal a way to the truth? So, which religion is the right one and how can the seeker of truth come to know it? This is the main subject of this work.

When beginning the search for the true religion, one should keep the following four things in mind:

Firstly, Allah has given us the ability and the intellect to discover the answer to this crucial question, which is also a lifechanging decision: What is the true religion?

Secondly, Allah, the Most Compassionate, has not left us to go astray without any guidance. Indeed, He sent us prophets with scriptures to show us the right path.

Thirdly, always remember the underlying reason for this search: the ever-lasting life to come depends upon finding the true religion in this life. This should be your ultimate motivation, and a driving force to keep you searching until you are completely satisfied.2

Fourthly, one can only determine the true path and make a rational and correct decision if one willingly puts aside all the emotions and prejudices, which often blind one to reality.

2 The Bible, in its present form, confirms that seeking the truth is the main cause for salvation. In John 8:32, it has been stated, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Muslims believe that the existing form of the Bible contains elements of the original true message, although it has been altered significantly.

Wise individuals know that they exist for a purpose and a final destination, whether or not they are aware of the exact nature of that destination. Wise individuals also understand that if they do not know where they are going, they will never strive to reach there. This little book has shed some light on the following:

# Why were human beings created?
# What is their final destination?
# How can they reach that destination ‘safely’?

With this short preface, I leave you to peruse the book. Continue reading

The Day of Resurrection: In The Light of The Qur’an and Sunnah

Belief in the Day of Resurrection is one of the central tenets of Islamic faith. It is a belief that was preached by all the prophets, and it is a belief that makes sense of a sometimes incomprehensible world. Belief in the Day of Resurrection and the final Judgement brings benefits in this world, on the individual and social level. It makes the individual focus on what is in his or her ultimate best interests, guiding the person’s actions in ways that will benefit him or her and bring happiness in this world and the next. On the broader social level, this belief imposes controls on human greed and restrains people from committing transgressions for which they would ultimately have to answer. The Qur’an and the Sunnah are filled with detailed information about what will come to pass on that great Day. Drawing upon these sources of Islam, Dr. ‘Umar al-Ashqar takes us through the events of that Day, from the first Trumpet-blast and the end of life in the universe and on earth, through the terrors of the Resurrection and the ordeals of the Judgement, to the final entry to the place of eternal abode, in Paradise or Hell. This is a book which deserves to be on Muslim bookshelves in homes, schools, and Islamic centres, for it deals with a topic of vital importance to every believer. This Islamic Creed Series of books has been translated into English by Nasiruddin al-Khattab. Continue reading

The Key To Paradise: An Explanation To The Testimony Of Faith And Its Benefits

When the Messenger of Allah (salallahu alaihi wa salam) was sent to the polytheists to call to this statement, ‘None has that right to be worshiped save Allah,’ that understood something from it that made them reject it, opposed the Messenger, and all those who believed in it. What was this understanding? Was it the understanding that Allah existed and was One? They already believed in this. They believed that He was the Creator, Nourisher, Sustainer, in His hands was the control of all affairs, and in His hands was life and death.

It was said to al-Hasan, ‘People say that whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped,’ shall enter Paradise.’ He said, ‘Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped save Allah,’ and fulfills its obligations and meets its requirements shall enter Paradise.’

Wahb ibn Munabbih was asked, ‘Is not the testification that “none has the right to be worshipped save Allah” the key to Paradise?’ He replied, ‘Of course, but every key has its teeth: if you bring a key that has teeth, the door shall open; but if not, it will not.’

My brothers! Strive, today, to your utmost in actualizing Tawhid, for nothing else can take you to Allah. Be desirous for establishing its rights for nothing else will save you from the punishment of Allah. The testification of Tawhid has many great benefit, it is not possible to enumerate them all, however, the author mentions fifty-five benefits of it.

This small treatise deals with the correct and accurate meaning of the testification of Tawhid and with an extremely beneficial appendix – The Types of Hearts – by al-Hafiz ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah.

About Imam Ibn Rajab al Hanbali (736 – 795 AH)

He was the noble Imaam, the Haafidh, the Critic, Zayn-ud-Deen ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Ahmad bin ‘Abdir-Rahmaan bin al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Abil-Barakaat Mas’ood As-Salaamee Al-Baghdaadee (due to his place of birth), Al-Hanbalee (due to his madh-hab), Ad-Dimashqee (due to his place of residence and death). His kunyah was Abul-Faraj, and his nickname was Ibn Rajab, which was the nickname of his grandfather who was born in that month (of Rajab).

He was born in Baghdad in 736H and was raised by a knowledgeable family, firmly rooted in knowledge, nobility and righteousness. His father played the greatest role in directing him towards the beneficial knowledge.

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab, may Allaah have mercy on him, was deeply attached to the works of Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah, for he would issue legal rulings according to them and would constantly reference his books. This is since he served as a student under Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, the most outstanding student of Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah, may Allah have mercy on all of them. But in spite of this, he (rahimahullaah) wasn’t a blind follower or a fanatical adherent (to his teacher). Rather, he would review, authenticate, verify and follow the evidences.

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab, may Allaah have mercy on him passed to the  realm of the Akhira in  Ramadaan, 795H. He died while in Damascus. Continue reading

The End Of The World

Shaykh Muhammad Mitwalli Al Sharawi
Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 82 | Size: 3 MB

From the pen of the late, famous scholar Shaykh Muhammad Mitwalli al-Sha’rawi. The question of the end of the world is a topic  which has captured the interest of all, including scientists and the pseudo-scientists who offer theoretical predictions about  how the world will come to an end. Such theories change on a regular basis because they are not based on true knowledge, which  is to be found only in Allah’s Revelation. In this book Shaykh Al Sha’rawi points out the contrast between the changing  perspective of the human being and immutable universe in which he lives and which provides the human being with evidence of  his Creator. He also points out how the apparent stability of the universe can delude someone lacking belief in the Creator so  that he fails to realise the true nature of existence, the transience of the human being and the necessity of awakening from  the delusion of his own power before death forces him to wake up.

Shaykh Muhammad Mitwalli ash-Sha’rawi was born in a middle class family in the village of Daqadus in Egypt. Educated at the  famours Al Azhar University where Scholars where scholars such contributed Shaykh Ahmad Yusuf Nagati, Shaykh Ahmad `Imara,  Shaykh Ibrahim Hamrush, Saykh Muhammad Mustafa al Maraghi. Shaykh al-Sha’rawi mentions other non-Azharites whose knowledge he  benefited from including Imam Hassan al-Banna who had a unique mythology of lecturing.

Shaykh al-Sha’rawi started his Azharite teaching work in Tanta’s institute of religious studies. He was then transferred to  equivalent institutes in al-Zaqaziq, Alexandria and King Abd al-Aziz al-Sa’ud university in Makkah.

He retired from the Azharite career in 1976. In the same year he was appointed by president Sadat as a minister of Waqf. He  stayed in that position for two years.

In 1980 he started his famous Friday lessons on the Egyptian television. His speaches in Qur’an interpretation (Tafsir)  attracted a massive audience that is probably unparalleled by any contemporary Azharite. Continue reading

The Dreamer’s Handbook: Sleep Etiquette And Dream Interpretation In Light Of The Sunnah

https://islamfuture.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/the-dreamer-s-handbook.jpg

Muhammad Mustafa Al-Jibaly
Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 363 | Size: 4 MB

Our soul inevitably passes though a route starting from birth, passing through death and ending with our resurrection in the next life. This route revolves around death and is strongly marked with events that precede and succeed it. These events include sickness, Pre-Death and Post-Death actions, the intermediate life in the grave (al-Barzakh}, and periods of sleep that count as “minor death”. These, and related issues of the Soul, are the subjects that “The Inevitable Journey discusses over a Sequence of Titles:

1. Sickness, Regulations & Exhortations

2. The Final Bequest, Islamic Inheritance and Will

3. Funerals, Regulations & Exhortations

4. Life in al-Barzakh

5. Dreamer’s Handbook

Sleep can be a welcome occasion of pleasurable rest, or a hateful predicament of fear and terror. Islam, praise be to Allah, presents a clear understanding of sleep and dreams, and provides a complete code of Sleep etiquettes and extolments. This can help make sleep a rewarding experience that brings useful rest and pleasant dreams.

This book starts by presenting a spiritual understanding of sleep from the Islamic viewpoint, which is followed by guidelines for recommended evening, pre-sleep, night, and morning acts of worship. The conceptual understanding of dreams is laid out next, followed by an analytical study of dreams in the Quran, and of dreams seen by the Prophet Muhammad and by his companions. The rest of the book deals with dream interpretation, its correct rules and procedures, drills to help understand these rules, and a large glossary of interpreted dream symbols.

This, we hope, fulfils two important goals regarding sleep and dreams: It establishes their understanding upon the strong foundation of the Quran and Sunnah, and it eliminates a great deal of superstition that surrounds them. Indeed, from Allah alone we seek help and acceptance. Continue reading
