Every individual is born into a religious environment that is not necessarily in accordance with his or her choice; children are raised to follow the religion or ideology of their family, society or culture. Even as new-borns, they are assigned either the religion of their family or the ideology of the state; in some countries, the child’s assigned religion is even recorded on the birth certificate. By the time individuals reach their teens, they have usually accepted the beliefs of their parents or their particular society, feeling that they have little choice in the matter.

However, individuals often encounter, or are exposed, to various beliefs and ideologies throughout the course of their lives, leading many to question long-held beliefs, traditions or philosophical ideas. They begin to question the validity of their own beliefs. Seekers of truth often reach a point of confusion, especially upon realizing that the believers of every religion, sect, ideology and philosophy claim to profess the one and only truth.

There are only three possibilities: either everyone is correct or everyone is incorrect; or, only one is correct and the rest are incorrect. It is impossible for all of them to be upon the true religion as the fundamentals of all religions are different. On the other hand, to claim that they are all incorrect is to deny that Allah (Subhânahu wa Ta‘âlâ – Glorified and Exalted is He) revealed His will to humankind. This proposition will seem absurd to those who believe in a Wise Creator. After all, why would Allah create human beings and not reveal a way to the truth? So, which religion is the right one and how can the seeker of truth come to know it? This is the main subject of this work.

When beginning the search for the true religion, one should keep the following four things in mind:

Firstly, Allah has given us the ability and the intellect to discover the answer to this crucial question, which is also a lifechanging decision: What is the true religion?

Secondly, Allah, the Most Compassionate, has not left us to go astray without any guidance. Indeed, He sent us prophets with scriptures to show us the right path.

Thirdly, always remember the underlying reason for this search: the ever-lasting life to come depends upon finding the true religion in this life. This should be your ultimate motivation, and a driving force to keep you searching until you are completely satisfied.2

Fourthly, one can only determine the true path and make a rational and correct decision if one willingly puts aside all the emotions and prejudices, which often blind one to reality.

2 The Bible, in its present form, confirms that seeking the truth is the main cause for salvation. In John 8:32, it has been stated, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Muslims believe that the existing form of the Bible contains elements of the original true message, although it has been altered significantly.

Wise individuals know that they exist for a purpose and a final destination, whether or not they are aware of the exact nature of that destination. Wise individuals also understand that if they do not know where they are going, they will never strive to reach there. This little book has shed some light on the following:

# Why were human beings created?
# What is their final destination?
# How can they reach that destination ‘safely’?

Verily Allah the Exalted, the Most High, sent His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) with the Guidance, and revealed upon him al-Qur’an. A complete constitution for this eternal Ummah, until Allah inherits the earth and that which is upon it.

He bestowed upon him the interpretation of al-Qur’an and something comparable to it, with it.

For the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) is composed of statement and action, it is derived from the Book of Allah, and is indicative of its meaning.

The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) promptly seized the Noble Book and the Purified Sunnah, safeguarding, studying and recording [the two sources of revelation].

Allah obligated Himself the task of protecting and preserving His Honoured Book. He appointed for the Prophetic tradition, those who would protect and devote their attention to it, from the time of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) to our time now, and until Allah inherits the earth and that which is upon it.

By the providence/ of Allah, the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has occupied the platform of patronage and concern by the Scholars in every age and land. Hence, they have completed the preservation, recording and codification [of the Sunnah] [by means of] the works of Musnad, the authentic compilations, the works of Sunan, and the Hadeeth based lexicons. From amongst those who have participated in this noble service of the Sunnah and it’s codification is Imam Abu Zakariyyah Yahya ibn SharafAl-Nawawee Al-Dimashqee [631-676 H]. He is reckoned to be amongst the exemplary and distinguished personalities of the seventh century. He authored numerous books of great benefit in miscellaneous subjects, ubiquitously accredited with praise and eulogy for their immense value.

Accordingly, the Scholars devoted themselves to their study, deriving benefit, and transmitting from them by virtue of their utility. About the Author:

The Egyptian sheikh Abdul Hamid Kishk passed away on the 6th of December 1996, at the age of 63. The Sheikh was very well known around the world for his fiery Jumaa khutbas and his outspoken stance against injustice and oppression in the Muslim world. Cassette recordings of his talks have been circulating throughout the world in Arabic speaking circles, and his knowledge, style and eloquence have driven many to change their lives. It is perhaps the mercy of Allah that he therefore passed away while in Sujood, on the day of Jumu’ah, as he prayed remembering the occasion of Isra’ and Mi’raj.

The Sheikh was born in 1933 in Shibrakheet, a small village near Alexandria, Egypt in a very poor family. His father passed away before Abdul Hamid reached schooling age. He joined one of the schools of Azhar and by the age of 8 he had memorized the Quran. It was at this time that he was inflicted by an illness which took his sight. However, rather than demoralize him, the loss of his sight encouraged him to learn more and persevere further.

He graduated as a scholar from the faculty of Usoul al Din in Azhar and was appointed as an Imam, giving kutbas all over Egypt. Around 1964 he took up the minbar of ‘Ain al-Hayat mosque in Cairo as his platform and started to speak vociferously about the social conditions in Egypt and the suppression of the Islamic Movement. This did not stop him from having distinctly spiritual approach to life, something which his speeches reflect. In 1966 he was arrested and was imprisoned and tortured for two years.

When Sheikh Kishk was released in 1968, he did not walk out of prison with his head bowed down to the Regime but he became even more critical and energetic. Though he was arrested and released many times after this, it was over the next 10 years that the most of his audio and video tapes were recorded, more than 2500 tapes are in circulation! His speeches became so popular that the Mosque was extended 3 times to accommodate the congregation. During 1981 and 1982 Sheikh Abdul Hamid was again imprisoned, but this time on his release he was forbidden to give any more speeches. Even this did not silent him, for upto 1996, this blind man wrote over 115 books and booklets, including a tafsir, (one of his books, on Angels, has been translated to English by Dar Al-Taqwa, London).

The inspiration he gave us all, the love and respect that people felt for him, will always keep his memory alive. May Allah forgive and bless the soul of Sheik. Continue reading

Educated at the famous Al Azhar University where scholars such contributed Shaykh Ahmad Yusuf Nagati , Shaykh Ahmad `Imara , Shaykh Ibrahim Hamrush, Saykh Muhammad Mustafa al-Maraghi . Shaykh al-Sha’rawi mentions other non-Azharites whose knowledge he benefited from including Imam Hassan al-Banna who had a unique mythology of lecturing. Shaykh al-Sha’rawi started his Azharite teaching work in Tanta’s institute of religious studies. He was then transferred to equivalent institutes in al-Zaqaziq, Alexandria and King Abd al-Aziz al-Sa’ud university in Makkah He retired from the Azharite career in 1976. In the same year he was appointed by president Sadat as a minister of Waqf. He stayed in that position for two years. In 1980 he started his famous Friday lessons on the Egyptian television. His speaches in Qur’an interpretation (Tafsir) attracted a massive audience that is probably unparalleled by any contemporary Azharite. Continue reading

The invocation of my brother Yunus, “none has the right to be worshipped save You; glory be to You, far removed are You from any imperfection; I have been amongst the wrong-doers,” none who is experiencing difficulty employs it except that Allah would relieve him of his difficulty.

# What is the meaning of this du’a (prayer, supplication)?
# Are their any unstated conditions that have to be met when one articulates it?
# What is the connection between belief in the heart and the meaning of this supplication such that it leads to the removal of difficulty?
# Why did he explicitly confess, ‘I have been amongst the wrong-doers’ when it is known that tawhid in itself leads to the removal of difficulty?
# Is it sufficient to acknowledge ones’ sin alone, or must this be accompanied by repentance and the firm resolve not to repeat that sin in the future?
# Why is it that difficulty and harm is removed only when a person relinquishes any hope, reliance and dependency upon the creation?
# How can the heart relinquish the characteristic of putting hope in the creation and depending on them, and instead put its hope in Allah, Exalted is He, and turn to Him in its entirety?
# What are the methods that would aid the heart in doing this?

The Prophets of Allah are the greatest men that ever lived. They are the role models for humanity. Their hearts were the purest, their minds were the wisest, and their deeds were the most righteous. But a lot of what is narrated about them is fact mixed with fiction. Neither the Bible nor historical works provide a reliable account of these great men. The myths surrounding the lives of the prophets have even spilled over to some Muslim history books. So then, where can we learn about the Prophets of Allah? The truth about them is learned through the Quran and Hadith.

“The Lives of the Prophets” is a series of lectures delivered by Anwar Al-Awlaki. It is the first such series produced in the English language. The author has done extensive research in the original Arabic resources. The series is based primarily on Ibn Kathir’s ” Al-Bidayah wa-nihayah (The Beginning and the End)”. Br. Al-Awlaki has done an excellent job of relying almost completely on the Quran, Hadith and statements of the Noble Companions.

Imam Ibn Kathir’s “Al Bidayah wa-nihayah” is considered to be one of the most authoritative sources on Islamic history. Ibn Kathir (700H/1301 – 774H/1372) uses his background as a Mufasir (Commentator) on Quran, scholar of Hadith, and historian to give a comprehensive view on the lives of the prophets.

Even though Ibn Kathir’s work is the primary source for this series, Imam Anwar has consulted other books on Tafsir and Hadith to provide the English-speaking world with a lively account of the lives of the prophets of Allah. Continue reading

The Aqeedah Of At-Taifah Al-Mansoorah: A text explaining the aqeedah of the Taifatul Mansoorah with evidences from Quran and Sunnah. Know, O servant of Allaah, that Allaah (SWT) created the whole creation behind which was a great Hikmah (wisdom) and that is to worship Him alone without making any association with Him (SWT). Allaah (SWT) said:

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

“And I did not create man or Jinn except for my worship.” [Dhariyaat 56]

The above ayah means to worship Allaah (SWT) singularly and alone (i.e. Yuwahidoon). He ( SWT ) has also said:

وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ عَـٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعۡبُدُ

“And you do not worship what I worship.”[Kaafiroun 3]

Allaah (SWT) has negated all of the worship the Mushrikeen (idolators) undertake even if they performed some ritual actions for Him (SWT); since they used to perform Shirk (association) in their worship and did not practice Tawheed. Tawheed being to dedicate all Allaah (SWT)’s rights to Him exclusively without association. He (SWT) says:

وَأَنَّ ٱلۡمَسَـٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدۡعُواْ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدً۬ا

“And the Masaajid (mosques) are for Allaah alone. So invoke none (make Du’a) along with Allaah.” [Jinn 18] Continue reading

Why Were We Created

We have to answer the most fundamental question that every human being asks himself at some point in his or her lifetime. Not just Muslims, but every single human being. “Why was I created? Why am I here? What am I doing in this world? Why did God create me?” These questions, are questions which each and everyone of us reflects on at some point during their life. We have some answers, which are given generally, but usually these answers don’t satisfy us, they seem somewhat simplistic. We still wonder. “Why me? Why here?” I know all of you, generally speaking, in the back of your mind, you are saying “to worship Allâh, khallas (finish), what more is there to say? Why do we need to have a big long talk on why we were created, when we all know it is to worship Allâh?” But wait, if this is presented to a non-Muslim, the next logical question would be “why does Allâh want us to worship Him?” and then your stuck.

It means, in our own minds it is not really clear to us. Why did Allâh create us to worship Him? The question, why did Allâh create us, for some people, and we have to deal with those people around us, who don’t consider there to be any purpose in man’s creation because he is just a product of evolution that the forces of nature have produced him, and just as we don’t have apes, dogs or cows thinking about why they are here, then we don’t really have to think about it either. Of course that being the basis of the philosophy of western society, that man is without purpose, then the whole issue of government, morality etc has no basis in Revelation, there is no guidance there. The product of this is of course the corruption that we are living in.

For a Muslim, when we go in to this topic, we have to find our understanding in divine revelation and not human speculation. Because human speculation has no bounds, we can imagine all kinds of things, and is any of you have studied philosophy of religion, you can see how many opinions exist about the creation of man and existence. Because of the variety of philosophies, which are out there, no one can say this one is correct or that one is incorrect, because there is no guidance behind it. No divine revelation. It is only from divine revelation that we can determine the reality of our creation, because it is Allâh who has created us and he knows the purpose of our creation. We can hardly understand ourselves, much less try to understand the essence of things. So it is for Allâh to inform us through the revelation in the Qur’ân and the Sunnah which was brought by his last Messenger sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the Messengers before. Now if we are to look, initially into revelation, to determine why was man created, there is a deeper question that we should be asking before that. “Why did God create?” Before we even get to man, why did god create, because man is not the greatest act of creation that we should be so focused on why man. No, because Allâh says:

لَخَلۡقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَڪۡبَرُ مِنۡ خَلۡقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَڪۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ

“The creation of the Heavens and the Earth is indeed greater then the creation of mankind; yet, most of mankind know not.” [Sûrah Ghâfir, verse 57]

Man is not the greatest act of creation, this universe is far more complex and far more magnificent then man. So the issue of creation should then go to why create? As opposed to simply why create man?

Fundamentally, we can say that the creation is the natural consequence of the attribute of creator. Allâh is the creator. That is one of his attributes. That is what he has informed us. That being his attribute, the creator, the natural consequence or the product of this attribute is his creation. Continue reading
